Arena is a rapidly growing pharmaceutical company that is focused on advancing several potentially "best in class" drugs to market. It's an exciting time for Arena, and this is an opportunity to join a dynamic team focused on significantly impacting the lives of patients and their families. The Head of Tax is Responsible for leading all aspects of global corporate income tax, transfer pricing, sales and use tax, real and personal property tax and VAT. Lead, develop, implement and defend the federal, state and global corporate tax strategies, tax compliance and financial tax reporting. Lead the tax analysis and recommendations for business development transactions. Partner with Arena management and third party service providers to ensure the policies and processes mitigate risk and proactively identify savings opportunities. This position will also oversee the insurance management responsibilities. What you'll dive into:

  • Provide leadership and oversight for the execution, control, and risk management for tax purposes of all transactions and structures for all US and Global companies.
  • Provide tax planning support for current and new business initiatives, including the development of tax forecasts to allow for tax planning and long-range projections of effective tax rates and the implementation of appropriate transfer pricing planning, oversight of the Company's transfer pricing policies and related documentation, and the coordination of annual transfer pricing studies.
  • Manage tax-related special projects such as intercompany transactions and contracts, formation of new legal entities, and due diligence for business development activities advising on income tax related matters including valuation of acquired net operating losses, input on tax implications of deal structure, and any other relevant tax related matters.
  • Execute federal, state, and global tax strategies based on company goals and objectives to minimize the Company's effective tax rate.--
  • Oversee and direct global income tax and VAT compliance.
  • Work with outside providers as needed to assess and manage R&D tax credits.
  • Oversee and/or prepare quarterly tax provisions, tax-related account reconciliations, return-to-provision, and tax footnote for 10K/10Q filings.--
  • Work closely with the tax compliance consultants and the Company's financial statement auditor to ensure that all tax positions, including uncertain tax positions, of the Company are appropriately included in the Company's tax provisions, financial statements, and tax returns.
  • Prepare memos and any other documentation necessary to support the Company's planning and positions taken for tax purposes.
  • Responsible for related Sarbanes-Oxley internal control requirements, including ensuring documentation reflects best practices and procedures for tax processes and monitoring the execution of tax policies, procedures and controls.
  • Keep abreast of changing regulations and jurisdictions to apply to the business, including impact on returns and provision.
  • Partner closely with other departments to ensure that they understand the requirements for achieving business tax objectives.
  • Manage IRS, state and global tax audits to achieve the best and most appropriate outcome for the Company.
  • In the future, recruit, train, develop and mentor Company tax professionals.
  • Coordinate internally and manage broker for insurance programs (including D&O, product, property, etc, excludes health benefits and worker's comp)
  • Prepare and present tax related recommendations to Board of Directors and Executive Team, as needed What we expect:
    • Bachelor's degree in Tax, Finance or Accounting; Masters in Taxation or CPA required.
    • Minimum of 15+ years in progressively responsible and relevant tax, finance or accounting positions, preferably with commercial, public-company experience in the life science industry
    • Strong understanding of federal, international, and multi-state corporate income taxation and complex tax issues
    • Knowledge of finance, accounting and control principles including GAAP and SOX
    • Motivation as a self-starter, ability to show initiative/independence and drive to make important business contributions.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Ability to demonstrate excellent judgment, gain results and be goal oriented.
    • Highly collaborative
    • Demonstrated skill at negotiating with business partners or management and influencing senior level leaders regarding matters of significance to the organization.
    • Proficiency at creating and communicating a clear vision among team members effectively aligning resources and activities to achieve functional area and/or organizational goals. What you'll get:
