Harris & Associates is looking for a Senior Archaeologist (Southern California) The Senior Archaeologist is responsible for leading cultural resources field work and analysis, preparation of technical documentation and reports, managing project schedules and budgets, and coordinating internal and external teams associated with project work and other environmental services activities. This individual must have experience preparing environmental documents in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The ideal candidate will be a Registered Professional Archaeologist who meets the Secretary of the Interior's (SOI) Standards for Archaeology. This is a part time position scheduled for approximately 20 hours per week. More hours may be required, dependent on available workload. Benefits will be provided with the 20 hour per week schedule. Responsibilities & Duties
    • Lead business development activities in the area of cultural resources, including the identification of opportunities, preparation of proposals and participation in interviews to win new work
    • Cultivate strong relationships with clients, including frequent communication to familiarize them with Harris's services and identify opportunities associated with cultural resources, CEQA and NEPA, and other Harris services
    • Act as primary point of contact with agency cultural resources staff to process environmental compliance documentation and negotiate mitigation requirements
    • Develop mitigation strategies for projects in coordination with the client, lead agency, and regulatory agencies
    • Conduct archival and record searches for project compliance and coordinate Native American consultations in compliance with Senate Bill 18 and Assembly Bill 52, when necessary
    • Manage and lead the preparation of technical reports including cultural resources studies, constraints studies, reports and documentation consistent with regulatory requirements
    • Lead teams conducting field work including pedestrian surveys, limited shovel test pits, and cultural monitoring
    • Assist in recruiting, hiring, skill development, and mentoring cultural resources staff
    • Manage tasks related to cultural resources, CEQA, and NEPA, including those being prepared by in-house staff and sub-consultants
    • Apply cultural resources expertise to environmental analyses, special studies, regulatory permitting, surveys, and monitoring
    • In addition to cultural resources, this position may be responsible for the preparation of other environmental topics, as necessary Qualifications & Skills
      • Registered Professional Archaeologist
      • Minimum of 20 years of related work experience, at least 15 of which are related specifically to CEQA and cultural resources documentation
      • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects requiring the preparation of environmental compliance documents with supporting technical studies
      • Demonstrated ability to manage cultural resources and planning teams, including field work components
      • Strong relationships with key clients and agency staff
      • Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, environmental sciences, planning or related field. Master's degree preferred. An advanced degree (Masters) in any of these areas may be substituted for one year of work experience.
      • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
      • Strong oral and written communication/interpersonal skills
      • Strong research, mathematical/scientific and analytical skills
      • Ability to multi-task and change priorities quickly
