Operational Risk provides leadership in the planning, development and implementation of the operational risk framework, policies, standards, and procedures which are aligned with the Bank's strategic goal.

This role assesses, identifies, controls, manages, and mitigates risks to operational processes and additional operational categories that could impede strategic, reputational, security, or financial success of the bank. This role requires a self-starter that can liaise with stakeholders across business units and support functions in the bank. Familiarity with the concepts of operational risk, the bank's process flows, -and control environment, combined with strong interpersonal and analytical skills are necessary for this role. -

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Develop, implement, maintain and monitor the Operational Risk Management framework within the second line of defense working closely with the first line and the different support functions in the bank
  • Facilitate operational risk event management framework and data collection, including the detailed reviews of significant events to ensure appropriate remediation plans are implemented, and identification of trends to identify significant or emerging risks
  • Review and evaluate new business and product initiatives and acquisitions to identify changes to the operation risk profile of the bank
  • Build and conduct quarterly trigger assessments for different divisions within the bank to ensure the risk and control self-assessment (RCSA) and tail risk scenarios remain accurately assessed and current
  • Facilitate challenge of business units and support functions RCSA and Control assessment ratings to ensure appropriate measurement approach and rationale has been employed
  • Identify, review, and make recommendations on key risks and control issues. Assign corrective action plans to business process owners
  • Maintain a complete risk mapping of operational processes and system maps, which include change management assessments
  • Conduct scenario analysis by working with stakeholders to develop and quantify scenarios measuring tail risks used for stress testing
  • Work with 1st line and different support functions to develop day to day risk management metrics, which quantify the divisions exposure to various types of operational risk
  • Contribute to the continuous development of operational risk methods and practices and the operational risk management framework
  • Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) dashboard
  • Prepare executive level reporting, Risk Management and Committee reports, communicate effectiveness of operational controls, report issues and recommendations to mitigate risk/loss
  • Provide training and awareness of key risk management policies to the Leadership Team and the broader organization

    • Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of relevant operational risk or audit and control experience
    • 3+ years of risk, audit, or regulatory experience in the operational risk discipline -
    • 3+ years of experience working in relevant areas such as internal control/ risk management areas, Audit, and/or Finance
    • Experience leading risk assessments including evaluating and designing controls, conducting impact assessments, identifying control gaps, and remediating risk
    • Experience communicating operational risk evaluation and assessment results or effectively challenge, both written and verbal to management and stakeholder/customers
    • Familiarity with enterprise risk management best-practices and controls
    • Demonstrated ability to present with impact and build consensus across senior stakeholder groups


      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Experience working within healthcare or financial services industry
      • Experience contributing to development of materials and reports for senior and executive level management (e.g., Board and Management Level Committee)
      • Thorough understanding of policies and best practices of risk management (certifications)
      • Exposure and understanding of accounting and finance
      • Relationship management skills including managing and engaging stakeholders, customers, and vendors, and building relationship networks


        California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $101,200 to $184,000 per year. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
