The Department of Cognitive Science promotes the study of learning,
perception, action, and interaction in the physical, material,
social, and cultural world. The approach is inter-disciplinary
employing ideas and techniques from a number of contributing
disciplines, including anthropology, communications, computer
science, ethology, electrical engineering, linguistics, neurology,
neurosciences, philosophy, psychology, rhetoric, and sociology.
The interdisciplinary cognitive science community on campus is
integral to cognitive science as practiced at UCSD. The department
offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in addition to the departmental
Ph.D., with participation by members of the Departments of
Anthropology, Biology, Cognitive Science, Communication, Computer
Science and Engineering, Linguistics, Music, Neuroscience,
Philosophy, Psychiatry, Psychology, and Sociology.
Under the direction of the Student Affairs Manager, position is
responsible for: curriculum planning/development/administration;
graduate program management; all student-related activities and
other educational matters pertaining to prospective and enrolled
This includes but is not limited to: serving as key advisor to the
Department Chair, Curriculum Committee, MSO and all faculty on
matters relating to the curriculum and graduate student affairs;
interpretation and implementation of appropriate policies,
regulations, and procedures; participation in short-term and
long-term departmental goals and objectives; management and
oversight of graduate student advising; overseeing student
enrollment and scheduling of courses; financial management and
long-range planning for student support issues; data development
and management to include all related analyses; and all other
activities associated with graduate affairs for the Department of

Experience with academic advising and counseling techniques.
Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures
relating to graduate students and curriculum administration, to
advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic
policies and requirements and to implement the department s goals
and objectives for the graduate program.
Demonstrated experience in higher education and an understanding of
the academic process.
Proven knowledge of accounting principles, business math and
bookkeeping for budget planning and analysis.
Strong fiscal/accounting skills. Experience with and knowledge of
finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund
accounting, audit trails, and use of cost-centers.
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and
pertinent databases. Knowledge of, StudentLink (preferred), World
Wide Web, ISIS (preferred), and other PC-related software to manage
and streamline workload. Theoretical knowledge of computer and
