DESCRIPTION

The Department of Cognitive Science promotes the study of learning, perception, action, and interaction in the physical, material, social, and cultural world. The approach is inter-disciplinary employing ideas and techniques from a number of contributing disciplines, including anthropology, communications, computer science, ethology, electrical engineering, linguistics, neurology, neurosciences, philosophy, psychology, rhetoric, and sociology.

The interdisciplinary cognitive science community on campus is integral to cognitive science as practiced at UCSD. The department offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in addition to the departmental Ph.D., with participation by members of the Departments of Anthropology, Biology, Cognitive Science, Communication, Computer Science and Engineering, Linguistics, Music, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Psychiatry, Psychology, and Sociology.

Under the direction of the Student Affairs Manager, position is responsible for: curriculum planning/development/administration; graduate program management; all student-related activities and other educational matters pertaining to prospective and enrolled graduate students.

This includes but is not limited to: serving as key advisor to the Department Chair, Curriculum Committee, MSO and all faculty on matters relating to the curriculum and graduate student affairs; interpretation and implementation of appropriate policies, regulations, and procedures; participation in short-term and long-term departmental goals and objectives; management and oversight of graduate student advising; overseeing student enrollment and scheduling of courses; financial management and long-range planning for student support issues; data development and management to include all related analyses; and all other activities associated with graduate affairs for the Department of Cognitive Science.

QUALIFICATIONS

*

Experience with academic advising and counseling techniques. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to graduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department s goals and objectives for the graduate program.
*

Demonstrated experience in higher education and an understanding of the academic process.
*

Proven knowledge of accounting principles, business math and bookkeeping for budget planning and analysis.
*

Strong fiscal/accounting skills. Experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund accounting, audit trails, and use of cost-centers.
*

Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Knowledge of, StudentLink (preferred), World Wide Web, ISIS (preferred), and other PC-related software to manage and streamline workload. Theoretical knowledge of computer and information management.
*

Ability to extract pertinent information from computerized databases and other sources, conduct analyses, and prepare proposals and reports. Skill in determining suitable utilization of computer applications to performance of task. Excellent mathematical skills for calculations involving data projections and adjustments.
*

Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of University, campus and departmental policies and procedures related to all fiscal and personnel matters. Ability to analyze which policies and procedures apply to a given situation. Clear understanding of the campus overall administrative goals.
*

Knowledge of Cognitive Science course content and faculty areas of interest. Ability to clearly explain and offer guidance on university and departmental regulations, procedures, and policies to current and prospective students.
*

Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to assess funding/staff problems and skill to identify logical solution. Strong analytical, inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Creativity to analyze and solve unusual and new problems in ways that establish effective and efficient procedures.
*

Ability to analyze work situation and implement long range plans to develop systems and procedures to fulfill complex organizational needs. Ability to formulate and retain sight of long range plans and goals while dealing with a myriad of day-to-day problems.
*

Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one s position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.
*

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent UCSD appropriately to internal and external constituents. Must be skilled at negotiating conflicts among staff, faculty and students.
*

Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with aptitude for working as part of a team. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
