    General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile projectiles, and missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

    We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Materials Engineer within our Concepts and Technology Development (CTD) group located in Rancho Bernardo, CA. This position participates in the development, production, characterization and analysis of novel materials required for sensor, battery, and other semiconductor device research. The ideal candidate under general supervision with limited review, is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of challenges, employing semiconductor related techniques to build prototype devices in our cleanroom facilities. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives, target specifications, and development goals.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Conduct research on new materials under the direction of senior staff that could be used to produce advanced sensors, solar cells, thin film transistors and other devices of interest
    • Perform experiments and computer modeling to study the nature, structure, and physical and chemical properties of advanced materials
    • Plan laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials having special characteristics
    • Develop new or advanced products or production methods.
    • Device design including, Photovoltaics, Sensors, and other semiconductor devices
    • Conduct hands-on operation of state-of-the-art microfabrication equipment including: stepper, mask aligner, spin coater, optical microscopes, FTIR, ellipsometer, e-beam evaporator, thermal evaporator, PECVD, RIE, and device probe stations
    • Conduct hands-on operation of thin film deposition equipment to produce thin film materials and perform process development using novel and creative approaches
    • Work in cleanroom laboratory with support personnel for cleanroom process operation and maintain day-to-day lab operations within cleanroom
    • Prepare scientific or technical reports or presentations
    • Perform Materials Analysis experiments using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and related equipment such as Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS),
    • Perform failure analysis, implement and carry out mitigation plans in timely manner.
    • Perform equipment maintenance, repair and upgrade. Maintain safe, clean and organized semiconductor cleanroom & laboratories.
    • Anticipates future engineering needs and the modifications required to accomplish a technical goal. 6.Addresses complex and difficult technical issues requiring novel and highly creative approaches drawing on advanced engineering concepts.
    • Document findings, communicates results to scientific staff and makes technical presentations as required. Publish in recognized scientific journals, present work at conferences.

      Job Qualifications
      • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
      • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
      • Prior hands-on experience in coating equipment and PVD/CVD coating processes highly desired. This includes, but is not limited to, sputtering, e-beam, thermal evaporative coatings, ALD etc.
      • Prior semiconductor industry experience is highly desired. This includes, but is not limited to, cleanroom protocol, common semiconductor processes such as photoresist spinning and lift-off, photolithography patterning, deposition, etc.
      • Software experience can be helpful, such as SolidWorks, MatLab, Python, etc.
      • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout development in an evolving environment.
      • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals; the capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and the ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
      • Must be customer focused, able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment
      • US citizenship is required. P referred Experience:
        • PhD in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science with experience in prototype development, Reverse Engineering (RE) Concepts and practices, working knowledge of compound semiconductors and process technology
