We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Mechanical Technician in our Nuclear Technologies & Materials division in support of our Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) and Energy Multiplier Module (EM2) projects for the Energy group at General Atomics. This position under limited supervision supports our scientific staff with a variety of engineering and operation activities and will report to the Torrey Pines/Sorrento Valley location.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Fabricates, modifies, installs, maintains, and documents complex laboratory and experimental equipment in conjunction with prototype and lab processes.
  • Interprets general instructions, plans sequence of assembly, maintains quality assurance documentation and prepares sketches and schematics.
  • May assist in the design, assembly, and development of basic lab, experimental, and commercial equipment and new designs and processes.
  • Operates equipment and/or performs tests requiring knowledge of processes pertinent to the EM2 project and the ability to read precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers and depth gauges.
  • Responsible for execution of a set of laboratory experiments or for a complex laboratory function.
  • Identifies and reports operational problems or trouble sources in equipment or tests, and cleans, adjusts, and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Executes experiments and collects, records, reduces, summarizes and maintains data on all new processes and effectively communicates information to engineering.
  • Diagnoses and corrects operational problems or trouble sources in equipment or tests. Interprets basic information displayed to recognize when various operating measurements are drifting out of established parameters. Adjusts operating parameters to bring systems back to satisfactory operating conditions. Develops solutions to problems that occur including assisting in the design of specialized components.
  • May provide direction to other technicians in assembly and maintenance of equipment, operation of tests, or laboratory practices.
  • May work with toxic materials, chemicals and gases, and may work with radioactive materials.
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices staying up to date with safety training classes.
  • Monitors all operations for regulatory and safety compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

    Job Qualifications


    • Typically requires associate's degree or equivalent with seven or more years of experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
    • Must be able to work with common hand tools and operate laboratory equipment.
    • Experience in the use of a lathe, milling machine, and/or drill press is preferred.
    • Experience with chemical handling and the use of a respirator is preferred.
    • Experience with understanding, interpreting, and making CAD drawings is desirable.
    • Must have strong math skills, and be able to convert between decimals and fractions, and convert between imperial and metric units.
    • Must have the capability to perform complex assignments under limited review.
    • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials, and must be able to perform duties with confidence while wearing personal protective equipment.
    • Works in a lab environment requiring long periods of standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs.
    • May operate heavy equipment (forklifts, cranes, lifts and company vehicle) to aid in the installation and removal of equipment. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required.
    • Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field required.
