Telework eligible Yes as determined by agency policy Duties Summary The automation specialist in the Operational Support Facility (OSF) within Terminal Services, serves as a technical coordinator. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities You will be responsible for development and improvement of agency air traffic control real-time computer systems by coordinating, planning and conducting support activities relating to the design, development, installation, testing, implementation, evaluation, maintenance and monitoring of these systems pertaining to operational practices, functions and requirements. Evaluate operational and support computer program functions as they apply to air traffic operational requirements. Provide timely assistance to the OSF Manager offering technical information and recommendations covering a variety of field support requirements such as problem identification, evaluation and resolution. Identify and refine the cause of problems and provide recommendations to management or senior engineer for resolutions or immediate correction and steps to avoid future occurrences. Apply experience and advanced knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts in order to accomplish assignments/activities. Design, monitor and evaluate the development and maintenance of OSF systems and site data bases to ensure reliable, consistent and effective operation support to air traffic control facilities and provide accurate statistical data for justification of future enhancements. Review and evaluate Program Technical Reports (PTR) and Program Improvements to determine their impact of functional, diagnostic, and support software. Use advanced knowledge of software/hardware system, sub-system and interface functions to determine the problem, and discusses alternatives and solutions to senior engineer or manager. Contacts are internal and external. Contributes to the preparation of correspondence and documentation as required to fulfill automation responsibilities. Alerts management of potential problems, issues or concerns that cause an operational impact to current and future systems. Perform air traffic control operational analysis as required for system specifications to ensure that system requirements are met. Review CPFS, NAS Change Proposals, Configuration Control Directives or other documents to verify technical feasibility of proposed changes and translates the approved changes into required system modifications. Conduct operational and technical analysis and pre-implementation evaluations of products to ensure system integrity and to determine conformance with specifications for air traffic control operational acceptability and/or air safety. Participate in studies for the improvement of the National Airspace System (NAS) form the aspects of system standardization, simplification, limitations and new technological developments applicable to system development. Define, plan, organize and carry out studies and duties within his/her areas of responsibility. Perform coordination and initiates follow-up action as required. The work affects the functioning of applications systems design and programs, and consequently a wide variety of subject matter functions carried on throughout the live air traffic environment. Work is reviewed periodically, typically at major milestones and at completion, for technical compliance and alignment with the requirements of the project or other work activity. If selected for this position at the FV-J, in addition to the above, your duties will include: Consulting with OSF manager to assign work to team members. Provide technical guidance to lower grade and/or new personnel within work area. May instruct automation specialist as assigned and review their completed work. Identifies personnel requirements, changes in the workload or operational problems and submit recommendations to management based on priority and capability of the staff to meet unanticipated problems or changes in deadlines and/or workloads. Monitor and evaluate training procedures, records and documentation for On the Job Training (OJT). Provide recommendations for formal and OJT training requirements, course design, development and materials. Travel Required 25% or less - The job may require up to 25% travel. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1)be in a school of engineering with at least 1 curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2)include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than 1st year physics & chemistry) in 5 of these 7 areas of engineering science or physics:(a)statics, dynamics;(b)strength of materials;(c)fluid mechanics, hydraulics;(d)thermodynamics;(e)electrical fields and circuits;(f)nature and properties of materials; and (g)any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR Combination of education and experience - college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1)a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2)a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. THE ADEQUACY OF SUCH BACKGROUND MUST BE DEMONSTRATED BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: Current registration as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico; OR evidence of having successfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) exam, or the written test required for professional registration; OR successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences AND in engineering that included the courses specified in paragraph 1; OR successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, provided the applicant had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision. In addition to the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position at the FV-I, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H or FG/GS-11/12 in the Federal Service. Specialized experience, is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience for the FV-I, may include but not limited to:Experience working with various computer systems, software programs or tools, and assisting in making corrections, modifications and/or enhancements to those systems. In addition to the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position at the FV-J, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I or FG/GS-13 in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience for the FV-J may include but not limited to: Experience working with various computer systems and software analysis programs in support of the National Air Space and experience evaluating operational support computer program functions as they apply to air traffic operational requirements.
