Job DescriptionVelia is a transformative biotech company with the ambitious goal to harness the therapeutic potential of a novel class of human peptides, also known as microproteins. Building upon our founders seminal work, the Velia team is constructing and deploying a novel target discovery pipeline that integrates computational science, high throughput profiling, functional genomics, and human clinical data. Innovative discovery scientists are encouraged to apply and bring intellectual curiosity, scientific rigor, and a strong desire to discover important, new medicines for patients.As (Associate) Director, Discovery Bioinformatics, you will be a member of a highly driven, interdisciplinary team focused on new target discovery and the development of first in class therapeutics.Job Description and Opportunities:The (Associate) Director, Discovery Bioinformatics will build a strong interdisciplinary computational team focused on building and enabling a novel discovery pipeline integrating ribosomal profiling, RNA-seq, mass spectrometry, cell screening, and patient data to identify and evaluate the therapeutic potential of novel peptides. You will work with these high-dimensional datasets (Ribo-seq, RNA-seq, high throughput functional screening data, etc.) in close collaboration with biologists and protein scientists, independently and collaboratively analyze internal and external datasets to generate hypotheses, identify biologic insights/targets and guide experimental design.Requirements

  • MS + 10-12 years of experience or PhD + 5-7 years of experience in computer/data science, bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, or a related discipline of applied research experience focused on genomic applications
  • Expertise in Python, R, shell, and other relevant programming languages, Unix/Linux development environments, and machine learning (neural networks, linear and non-linear classification and regression)
  • Experience working with NGS datasets, like RNA-seq, CHIP-seq, Ribo-seq, etc.
  • Experience with cloud computing (AWS, Azure) and high-performance/cluster computing
  • Ability to design / maintain a multidimensional, evolving database with an accessible user interface for non-bioinformaticians
  • A strong grounding in biology, and particularly a familiarity with one or more human disease areas such as oncology, immunology, and metabolic disease
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, goal-oriented, proactive, flexible and able to work collaboratively with a variety of groups
