The Database Operations Manager is a key role in ICW Group's
digital evolution. This role provides leadership and direction to a
team of DBA (Database Administration) professionals to design,
implement and maintain database systems both "on-premises" and in
the cloud. The position partners with Program Managers, Business
Intelligence teams, Data Scientists, and others needed to manage
and support large mission critical database environments providing
stability, and operational excellence. The Manager provides vision,
strategic direction, and leadership to the Database Operations team
and drives the enablement of cloud database capabilities in support
of the enterprise's strategic portfolio and operating goals.
*This is a Hybrid role working out of San Diego, CA office 3 days
in a week and 2 days working from home.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Leads enterprise database operations in support of the enterprise
strategic portfolio.
- Engages business and IT/data stakeholders to build and maintain
good working relationships.
- Communicates the value of database storage and its portfolio of
services.
- Drives the evolution of the DBA team services and operating
model for both on-premises and the cloud.
- Builds and manages a collaborative growing team of Database
Administration professionals where Team Members can thrive, learn,
and grow their skills.
- Analyzes and translates business needs into long-term scalable
data storage models. Creates, gathers, and writes business
requirements documents and technical requirements documents.
- Maintains ongoing management and stewardship of data
management, processing, and reporting. Manages database operations
support and delivery that ensures effective data storage and data
usability for the enterprise.
- Ensures the administration of database environments meets
system dependency service level agreements (e.g., database
installations, configuration, patching, tuning, file management,
back-ups, security, automated jobs, ongoing maintenance).
- Collaborates with the broader engineering community to ensure
solutions align with target architectures and technology
roadmaps.
- Implements and enforces security policies and procedures to
protect databases from unauthorized access, data breaches, and
other security threats.
- Validates that team activities operate within the policies and
procedures of the organization.
- Influences and communicates with all levels of Team Members on
database operations related topics.
- Educates business and IT partners on data storage architecture
and operations support model.
- Contributes to data governance and data quality best practices
including design reviews, unit testing, code reviews, and
continuous integration and deployment.
- Leads teams within IT to drive effective and efficient data
storage solutions that make the best use of traditional and cloud
platforms (AWS and similar) by understanding the business,
technology, and data landscape.
- Peer reviews database model designs for optimal storage and
retrieval and to meet critical product and business
requirements.
- Develops short-term plans to prioritize needs and resolve
urgent issues. Drives the vision for data storage and operations,
defines and executes a plan to achieve that vision.
- Leads the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive
data management and integrity program, including leading a
coordinated governance process involving key stakeholders.
- Engages with key stakeholders, industry experts, and technical
peers to understand technology and business requirements, industry
trends and the broader data storage architecture landscape.
- Maintains a strong understanding of the current landscape and
proactively leads the analysis of the current environment to detect
deficiencies, gaps, and opportunities.
- Collaborates with senior leadership to prioritize, initiate,
and implement database storage solution efforts aimed at addressing
opportunities.
- Collaborates with Enterprise Architecture team to drive the use
of tools and standards to improve the productivity and quality of
output for DBA across the company. Manages and leads a team of
database administration professionals.
- Provides strategic, tactical, and daily direction to data
engineering team. Communicates Mission, Values, and other
organization operating principles to direct and indirect
reports.
- Fosters a culture of quality, personal accountability, and
strong relationships with stakeholders and supporting IT
teams.
- Oversees the performance management and development process for
the team and performs performance management duties, development
planning, and coaching for direct reports.
- Manages Department budget, technology and other resources,
workloads, and customer requests for data services. Ensures
adherence to all Company policies and procedures and Compliance
responsibilities.
- Ensures data quality, adherence to IT security guidelines,
profitability and other risk-related metrics for self and members
of the team. SUPERVISORY RESPONISBILITIES
- Directly supervises enterprise database administration Team
Members and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance
with company policies and applicable laws.
- These responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and
training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work;
conducting performance and salary reviews; rewarding and
disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving
problems; coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to
further their skills and knowledge; creating and monitoring
development plans; setting performance expectations and goals;
forecasting staffing needs and planning for peak times and
absences; enforcing department policies and procedures. WHAT YOU
BRING TO THE ROLE
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS, or
similar field required (or equivalent combination of education and
experience).
- Minimum 10 years' experience working as a Database
Administrator (DBA) or similar experience in Database Operations in
a global IT operations environment required.
- Minimum 3 years' experience leading a DBA team, along with
managing business processes and business office operations
required.
- Experience working in the insurance or financial services
industries preferred. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- AWS Cloud Practitioner required.
- Advanced AWS certification(s) and Microsoft certifications in
corresponding fields of study (Windows Server/MS SQL Server)
preferred KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Database administration experience in a Microsoft environment
required, specifically with SQL Server RDBMS (Relational Database
Management System).
- Experience with SQL Server database technologies
(Always-On-Availability-Groups, replication, change tracking,
log-shipping, poly base, SQL server services (RS, IS & AS) et
al).
- Administration experience with unstructured or semi-structured
data stores preferred.
- Windows Server 2012/2016/2019 administration experience.
- Understanding of cloud security principles and best practices
(identity and access management, data encryption).
- Knowledge of Cloud Database Technologies including relational
databases, NoSQL databases and data warehousing.
- Implementation and/or administration experience with cloud
hosted databases (AWS, hybrid solutions) preferred, including
understanding of how to optimize cloud costs.
- Advanced knowledge of setting current and future state data
storage architectures.
- Proven experience with authoring roadmap documents, project
plans and RCAs.
- Must have the ability to: Make decisions and recommendations on
data storage strategies while considering various options and
business needs. Contribute valuable input to the strategic planning
process. Persuade peers and leaders within and outside area of
responsibility. Articulate and build support for a variety of
initiatives. Present information clearly and effectively to diverse
audiences. Build relationships with others in the organization to
foster a strong internal network. Adjust to changing circumstances
while still driving toward a clear outcome. COMPENSATION
The salary range listed for this position is exclusive of fringe
benefits and potential bonuses. If hired at ICW Group, your final
base salary compensation will be determined by factors such as
skills, experience and/or education. In addition, we believe in the
importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our
current team members as part of any final offer. We typically do
not hire at the maximum of the range in order to allow for future
and continued salary growth. We also offer a substantial benefits
package outlined below.
