Job DescriptionPLEASE APPLY AT: Job SummaryPURPOSE OF POSITIONThis position is accountable for planning, organizing, directing and controlling all health care services. Has overall responsibilities for supervision of nursing staff. Coordinates facilities and equipment to provide the highest quality of health care to Mount Miguel Covenant Village residents of health care unit and to assure all licensure requirements are met and all principles of good nursing care are followed.Responsibilities and DutiesThis position reports directly to the Health service Administrator and is primarily administrative in nature. The position also entails bedside nursing care from time to time. In performance of duties, the Director of Nursing is responsible for the following:

  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the Nursing Department in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
  • Determines the staffing needs of the Nursing Department necessary to meet the total nursing needs of the residents.
  • Supervises all licensed personnel, hiring, evaluating, disciplining, orienting, terminating and scheduling. Acts in same capacity for other nursing personnel in absence of the Assisted Director of Nursing. Verifies the nurses; licenses and CPR cards are kept current.
  • Prepares time schedule for all licensed personnel to assure facility is staffed sufficiently.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings with licensed personnel and CNA’s.
  • Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written policies and procedures that govern the day-to day functions of the nursing services department.
  • Performs administrative duties such as completing reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc. as necessary.
  • Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to the Health services Administrator, as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the nursing department.
  • Participates in surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
  • Supervises the execution of doctor’s orders and related treatments. Serves as direct liaison with physicians, families and nursing staff.
  • Serves as direct liaison with all outside agencies providing resident services.
  • Maintains regular communication with the Medical Director regarding conditions of residents. Notifies family and chaplains when patients’ conditions indicate.
  • Serves on, participates in, and attends various committees of the facility (i.e. Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assessment and Assurance, etc.) as required, and as appointed by the Health Services Administrator.
  • Develops and maintains an adequate Quality Assurance Program.
  • Prepares and plans the Nursing Department’s budget and submits to the Health Services Administrator for his/her review, recommendations, and approval.
  • Monitors the medication process and treatment and schedules to assure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • Monitors nursing care to assure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Other duties as assigned.Qualifications and Skills
    • This position requires a graduate of an accredited school of nursing who is State licensed as a registered nurse and two years experience working with patients in a long-term care facility
    • Must be able to communicate effectively in English with residents and staff. Must be able to read and write English in order to maintain proper records.
    • This position requires thorough knowledge of OBRA and Title 22 for skilled nursing facilities.
    • The position further requires an individual with the ability to supervise, motivate and direct staff. The individual must possess initiative and judgement in determining needs of residents and in maintaining resident care delivery in conformance with recognized standards.

This position requires proven leadership ability, including the ability to model appropriate team behaviors as well as excellent clinical skills.
