Senior Manager, Engineering

POSITION SUMMARY:
Oversee planning, conduct, and management of design, development and sustaining projects for medical devices in support of company's strategic plan. In conjunction with other senior managers, develop strategic plan for company. Manage Engineering team.

RESPONSIBILITY / AUTHORITY ASSIGNMENT:
In the absence of the Sr Manager of Engineering the Sr Director of Operations is responsible for decisions in the engineering and technical arena. The Sr Director of Operations backs up the Sr Manager of Engineering in his/her absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1.Comply with established company policies and procedures, objectives, regulatory & quality assurance program, safety and environmental standards.
2.Participates in formulating and administering company policies and developing long-range goals and objectives
3.Works with the marketing, sales, manufacturing, service, reliability and the management team to define Digirad's product development and R&D initiatives, translate these into new product programs with defined budget, staffing, and performance requirements.
4.Reviews analyses of activities, costs, operations and forecast data to determine department or division progress toward stated goals and objectives. Maintains detailed and on-going assessment of the key R&D project costs.
5.Develops, manages and improves the Design Processes. Key participant and manager of Digirad's New Product Process. This includes the organizational structure to support concurrent product development and support after the product is released into manufacturing. Assure that the Digirad Design Process aligns with the FDA and ISO requirements.
6.Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects such as preparation of records of expenditures and research findings, progress reports, and staff conferences, in order to inform management of current status of each project.
7.Applies engineering knowledge and knowledge of medical device industry to assist company in developing strategic plan for development of new products and enhancements to existing products.
8.Establishes procedures, protocols, policies and goals of department. Write department work instructions and standard operating procedures in support of GMP and ISO9000 regulations. Implement procedures as required.
9.Identify contractors, outside investigators, and technologies to use in development projects.
10.Hire, train, motivate, and develop research & development staff. Participate in staffing decisions for other Digirad functions that interact with R&D and/or that may require technical understanding of the product performance.
11.Use knowledge to solve difficult engineering/development problems and other functional areas such as manufacturing.
12.Act as spokesperson to public regarding company's development plans and technologies.
13.Ensure that intellectual property position of company is enhanced by department activities.
14.Ensure that all regulatory and internal policies are followed.
15.Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
16.Perform other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Excellent oral/written communication skills.
Excellent personnel management skills.
Extensive knowledge of medical device company, information technology and healthcare business strategy required.
Organization and time management skills.
Computer software applications, word processing and electronic spreadsheets.
Ability to:
Follow-through, assume responsibility and use good judgment.
Prioritize workload and determine priorities.
Maintain professionalism under stressful situations.
Communicate effectively and diplomatically with internal and external customers and other Digirad personnel both orally and in writing.Experience/Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience:
Ten or more year's experience developing products for medical applications involving the design and/or integration of complex semiconductor, micro-electronic and electrical systems.
Five or more years supervisory experience in an engineering or R&D setting.
Track record leading highly technical teams in successful product development activities.
