  • Prepares Dental patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials, and performs four handed dentistry during dental procedures.
  • Takes and records medical and dental histories and vital signs of patient.
  • Takes and monitors digital dental diagnostic x-rays as directed by the dentist.
  • Makes preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations.
  • Pours, trims, and polishes study casts; fabricates custom bleaching trays; cleans and polishes removable appliances.
  • Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
  • Instructs patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  • Provides and explains postoperative instructions prescribed by dentist.
  • Charts and records treatment information in patient Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Applies fluoride varnish to teeth when directed to do so by the dentist.
  • Inventories and orders supplies and materials for the back office.
  • Maintains dental equipment and coordinates repair of equipment when necessary.
  • Applies sealants, fabricates provisional crown restorations, performs coronal polishing and other dental auxiliary duties as approved by the Dental Board of California.
  • Coordinates sending and receiving lab cases with outside labs.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and mandatory trainings or obtains and completes trainings at a later date if unable to attend.
  • Maintain all licensure requirements needed to perform these duties, including maintaining CEUs.
  • Communicate effectively with dentists and dental assistants to ensure efficient and adequate oral care is provided to patients.

Education/Experience Six months to one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience; certificate of completion of Dental Assistant Technical School.Knowledge/SkillsLanguage Skills: Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Able to write routine reports and correspondence. Able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.Mathematical Skills: Able to perform basic mathematical calculations necessary to perform the job function.Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of electronic health and dental record software, database software, internet software, Microsoft Office applications.Reasoning Ability: Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions related to the dental field.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified. If required to drive personal vehicle for the SDAIHC, must possess a current/valid Department of Motor Vehicle California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, and auto insurance. Valid California RDA license, current coronal polishing and pit/fissure sealant certificate, valid x-ray certificate.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without accommodation.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull objects, including bodily motion
  • Moving on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly from one work site to another
  • Standing for sustained periods of time
  • Substantial movements of the wrists, hands and or/fingers to operate dental equipment such as sterilizers, suction, air/water syringes, ultrasonics, opening/closing cassettes, processing instruments, performing 4 –handed dentistry, operate computers and other office equipment such as telephones and printers
