Job Description:
SUMMARY The purpose of the Surgical Technology Clinical
Coordinator is to ensure appropriate educational clinical
experiences for the surgical technology students and availability
of sufficient clinical slots/sites. - It is the responsibility of
the Clinical Coordinator to prepare the students for their clinical
experience with lab practice, classroom lectures and scheduling of
physicals and clinical orientation for the clinical placement. -

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Scheduling/Coordination of student clinical hours and
assignments
- Scheduling of clinical instructors at clinical sites
- Bi-weekly verification that students have met their clinical
objectives
- Maintenance of documented quarterly communications with all
clinical affiliates, via clinical preplanning package, to relay
important clinical information, (i.e.: upcoming schedule of
clinical assignments, schedule changes, testing, documentation,
etc.)
- Assist with pre-clinical skills assessment, regular classroom
and other instructional assignments.
- Identify and secure new clinical affiliates as required by the
program. Maintain existing clinical affiliate sites and slots
available for clinical instruction at each site
- Inventory and procure equipment/supplies and assure readiness
of the clinical laboratory. Report all broken, defective or needed
equipment to Program Director and the Academic Dean immediately and
suggest remedy
- Documented visits to all clinical sites on a regularly
scheduled basis as approved by the Program Director
- Audits of student bi-weekly clinical evaluation forms to assure
current and accurate records
- Scoring of student's oral examinations and case
presentations
- Attend selected local ST educational meetings and other
appropriate Surgical Professional Society functions when not
conflicting with school duties
- Participate in all program graduation and pinning
ceremonies
- Processing of students' physical examination reports to assure
compliance
- Solve clinical problems as they arise
- Anticipate potential problems, plan and implement interventions
to address each problem effectively
- Demonstrate effective communications employing verbal, written,
and electronic modalities
- Assist the Program Director with any assigned projects
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director The ST
Clinical Coordinator is responsible for the following procedures:
Daily
- Student advisement
- Utilize CampusNexus to post comments on student advisement
- Monitor instructor assignments at each clinical site and daily
attendance reporting
- Provide clinical site coverage as may be needed
- Verify that clinical instructors are at clinical sites Weekly
- Collect and assess clinical preceptor evaluations from all
instructors on all students
- Audit clinical evaluations and other documentation for accuracy
to determine appropriateness of clinical assignments
- Marketing calls for the purpose of obtaining new clinical
sites/slots
- Weekly clinical report documentation to Program Director
- Assess clinical documentation for completion
- Monitor clinical schedule to assure students are completing
assignments in compliance with CAAHEP standards
- Post any revisions of clinical instructor schedules Monthly
- Verification that students have met appropriate objectives
- Process student physical examination reports for
completeness
- Visit and document visits to clinical sites for purpose of
auditing instructors, observing students and meeting with
Department Directors
- Complete clinical compliance reports, i.e. assessments and
actions plans
- Assure bi-weekly clinical evaluations of student's performance
are current and properly documented
- Assure student's clinical assignments are current and everyone
is aware of where students will be Quarterly
- Open letter to all clinical sites notifying designated
supervisors of clinical assignment schedules
- Quarterly goals and objectives to Program Director
- Make site visits for preceptor training and keep "Preceptor
Training Log" current Ongoing
- Assist in orientation of new students and admissions reps
- Assist in training of all new Surgical Technology faculty
- Assist in evaluating case presentations
- Assist as needed with classroom instruction and preclinical lab
and assigned assessment activities
- Accurately maintain the program clinical Injury Log with
follow-up scheduled as appropriate
- Marketing visits for the purpose of obtaining new clinical
sites
- Assist Admissions Department in recruitment activities
- Maintain clinical site folders to include scheduling documents,
student check-off's and hospital contracts
- Assure up-to-date list of clinical affiliates, clinical
educators and their input activities
- Attend two advisory board meetings a year
- Complete follow-up Action Reports on all identified
problems
- Keep all clinical event schedules current on each class.
Maintain master clinical assignment board
- Turn in completed student clinical folders at the end of each
clinical term
- Assess all clinical evaluation forms, attendance records, and
bi-weekly grade reports
- Assist with department management with assistance from Academic
Dean in Program Director's absence
- Assist Program Director with any assigned project
- Schedule student clinical assignments and rotations
- Assist in pre-clinical classroom and other instruction as
assigned
- Anticipate, plan interventions, and clinical problems
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY The Clinical Coordinator is responsible
for the supervision of students at the clinical sites/laboratory.
The Surgical Technology Clinical Coordinator is responsible for the
scheduling and supervising of clinical instructors, so that the
clinical students are all seen as required by the program.Job
Requirements:The Clinical Coordinator must have knowledge of the
surgical technology field and the clinical application of the
classroom knowledge. -The Clinical Coordinator must have problem
solving skills with critical thinking as a major component of
his/her ability. Organization and time management skills are
required. The knowledge of and skill with computer applications
have become an essential component of performing the duties
required of the Clinical Coordinator. EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION (updated
9.30.2020)
- Must be credentialed in the field of surgical technology
through a national certification program that is accredited by the
National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
- Minimum of four years clinical experience in surgical
technology with at least 3 years in the operating room scrub role
within the last 5 years
- Minimum of an associate degree in surgical technology
