The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a new Computer Resource
Specialist. Under direction and as a member of an oceanographic
research group, this employee will code, test, and debug
functionality for an XML database system using a variety of
programming languages. Learns to use professional concepts,
industry standards, and best practices in maintaining databases.
Works on problems of limited scope, normally receives detailed
instruction on work assignments and primarily works with other
members in the incumbent's unit. Follows standard practices and
procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can
be readily obtained.
The Computer Resource Specialist 2 will assist in training users
and provide support to users for procedural and minor technical
problems with the database system. The incumbent will be
responsible for maintaining documentation of the project. This
position will also be responsible for ensuring secure and stable
computer and network systems for all activities related to
acquisition, processing and analysis of data for a fleet of
specialized oceanographic equipment. Efficiently manage and perform
the specification, procurement, installation and maintenance of
computer and network hardware and software for a research group
working with large acoustic data sets.
This position requires interaction with staff, graduate, and
undergraduate students and may at times require travel. Work with,
support, and consult academic, research, engineering, and technical
staff, including undergraduate and graduate students, to maintain,
archive, process, troubleshoot, and analyze long-term data sets
from oceanographic instrumentation. Maintain, improve, and
implement new features into data processing and analysis software.
Provide work direction for undergraduate assistants to accomplish
research group s computer-related goals. Perform data quality
analysis and software development in support of instrumentation
performance evaluation, enhancements, and data error correction to
provide the highest possible data quality.

B.A. or B.S. in computer science, engineering, physical science or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated ability to program in MATLAB, Java, R, Python or
XML/XQuery for database improvements and maintenance, data and
signal processing, data evaluation, compression decoding, format
conversion, and quality analysis of large data sets.
Demonstrated ability to specify, assemble, install, and test
PC-based workstations and processing array computer hardware and
Strong working knowledge of UNIX, Mac OS, and Windows operating
systems, especially system administration tasks.
Proven ability to utilize, troubleshoot, and repair PC hardware and
software in support of instrumentation via network, serial port,
disk drive and other operations.
Proven ability to provide computer hardware and software
consultation services to a wide range of computer users from highly
technical to non-technical staff members.
Working knowledge of standard security procedures for servers,
workstations, firewalls, networks and data.
Demonstrated knowledge of state-of-the-art computer and network
systems with the ability to keep this knowledge current and
