Job Summary

The Senior Paralegal will have broad experience supporting patent prosecution and litigation. He/she will have the ability to perform and/or manage all of the tasks required by an active US patent docket, from filing to issuance, for patent preparation and prosecution. Experience supporting overseas patent prosecution (PCT) and thorough knowledge of at least one commercial patent information management system is required, as well as experience working with, and coordinating between, internal IP teams and external counsel. He/she must also demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the litigation process and e-discovery, and must have experience with database management software, and medium case collection, review and production experience. The position requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Candidate must be a team player and have exceptional attention to detail and ability to multi-task. This is a full time position in San Diego, reporting to the VP of IP & Licensing.

Roles & Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for:

  • Maintain & manage all aspects of the internal IP docket based on commercially available software (e.g., Anaqua, CPI, CPA, etc.) by working/coordinating with internal IP team and external counsel
  • Ability to file all applications, formalities and response documents for U.S and PCT utilizing online resources, i.e. EFS, ePCT and PCT Safe if needed, though this will normally be done through outside counsel.
  • Being accountable for working in and maintaining the docketing database including timely addressing and de-docketing of all actionable dates when applicable, providing timely instructions to docketing pursuant to new filings, status reports and docket meetings.
  • Working knowledge of disclosure requirements; Manages, prepares and files IDS/SIDS.
  • Staying current and compliant with MPEP and CFR rules and administrative changes at the USPTO and other foreign jurisdictions
  • Supporting litigation and related e-discovery matters as and when needed
  • Creating and implementing paper and electronic document collection, review and production systems and tracking documents with minimal supervision
  • Coordinating automated litigation support projects through utilization of technology, including, but not limited to, database management software (web or in-house) and Case Notebook.

  • Assisting attorneys in reviewing documents for privilege and drafts privilege logs for production to opposing party
  • Light administrative duties

      Minimum Qualifications (Experience and Skills)

      • Maintaining Confidentiality: Able to maintain strict confidentiality of the company's internal and personnel affairs and company information. Understands ethics of position including ethical rules in regards to confidentiality, privilege and attorney work product.
      • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
      • Collaborates effectively and professionally with everyone inside and outside the company
      • Proactive: Anticipates problems and issues and exercises independent judgment to make sound, justifiable decisions and take action in solving problems while knowing when and how to escalate.
      • 10+ years of law office and/or corporate legal department experience supporting US and foreign intellectual property and litigation matters
      • 5+ years of active US and international patent docket management experience; including experience with all types of documents involved US patent prosecution, and reasonable familiarity with PCT documents and procedures
      • 3+ years of experience with litigation process; understands e-discovery and computer forensics concepts such as litigation holds, preservation of data and chain of custody; knows how to create and implement paper and electronic document collection, review and production systems and tracking documents with minimal supervision; ability to assist attorneys in reviewing documents for privilege and drafts privilege logs for production to opposing party.

      • Outstanding organizational skills

      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Expert in Adobe, Microsoft Office and at least one commercial docket management system

        Preferred Qualifications

        • Ability to supervise and mentor junior paralegals or other administrative staff.

        • Experience working within internationally dispersed multicultural teams

        • Knowledge of Japanese language and culture
        • Notary Public, commissioned in the state of California, a plus

          Education Requirements

          • Bachelor's Degree and paralegal certificate
