DESCRIPTION =========== Serve as a professional Senior Staff Academic Counselor in all areas of academic advising for Revelle College students (exploration of life and career goals, selection of major, detailed knowledge of college and departmental emphases and requirements, academic difficulty, domestic and international exchange program opportunities, postgraduate alternatives, etc.). Responsibilities include: counseling students individually and in groups; analyzing, interpreting and implementing college and university broadly-defined policies; developing and implementing workshops, programs, and activities for students; and participating with colleagues in coordination and implementation of New Student Orientation/Registration Programs. Develop workshops and programs for targeted student populations and the general public. Act as liaison with academic department and centralized student-related campus offices. Interact with different constituencies of faculty, parents and the general public. Analyze and evaluate degree audits and time to degree for students. * Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work (i.e., Orientation, Commencement, Parent Day, and other College-sponsored events). QUALIFICATIONS ============== * Bachelor's Degree in related area and/or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Demonstrated knowledge of theories and principles of institutions of higher education as well as knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools. * Excellent counseling and advising techniques and knowledge, including active listening, interviewing, and referral, and a thorough understanding of their appropriate use in an institutional setting. * Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements. Demonstrated ability to independently analyze, interpret, apply and explain a variety of broadly defined college, departmental and campus academic policies and procedures including course articulation. * Demonstrated experience in program development/event planning, implementation and assessment intended to meet the needs of target populations. Proven ability to organize and conduct meetings, panel discussions, programs and workshops. * Demonstrated skill in using standard office computer technology for word processing, email and student tracking and monitoring systems (including MS office applications, internet technology and web based systems). Willingness and ability to update and maintain those skills as required. * Excellent skills in evaluating academic data and academic records to make analytical decisions and determine course of action within established policies and guidelines as appropriate. * Demonstrated ability to provide effective training and work direction to new staff members and student staff. * Demonstrated skills and abilities in decision-making, problem solving and conflict resolution with the ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy in dealing with a diverse population. * Proven ability in problem identification and reasoning with the ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Demonstrated skills in identifying needs, concerns and problems of groups and individuals and take immediate and appropriate action to provide support and guidance. * Demonstrated ability to identify issues and information requiring confidentiality along with related University policies, and the ability to maintain that confidentiality. * Excellent personal and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate in a professional manner, meaningfully and effectively, both in written and verbal form, to students, faculty, staff, and parents. Proven ability to work as a team member integrating functions with those of other staff members. * Proven ability to multi-task. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, organize and prioritize with frequent interruptions while performing multi-level tasks. * Ability to meet University and department standards for attendance and embrace and follow the UC San Diego Principles of Community.
