The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments
within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127
postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320
support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the
Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the
Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are
intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.
The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health
system with the physicians and leadership of the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady
Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation,
unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community
Independently performs animal husbandry and molecular/cell biology
procedures that focus on the role of hypoxia (low oxygen) on gene
expression in mouse as well as other models. Has the authority to
modify protocols as needed with some supervision. This may include
changing the protocol for mouse genotyping and other lab protocols
communally used by the researcher. Trains technicians and fellows
in basic and complex lab procedures, both molecular and animal
related procedures, such as basic pipet use, DNA preparation
protocols, PCR, mouse breeding, husbandry, and surgeries.
Analyzes data and interprets results by using Prism, Excel and
other computer applications. Analyzes and interprets the results of
molecular techniques (i.e. qPCR/PCR, Western Blot) and modifies
experiments accordingly. Manages all organization and processing of
requisition forms for ordering supplies and equipment. This also
includes maintaining records/computer files of all supplies
ordered, and distributing the supplies to researchers when
received. Maintains an inventory of stock, monitors the shelf life,
and determines the need for increasing stock of common use lab
supplies. Contributes to manuscripts and grant proposals.
Theoretical knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry and
genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques as typically
acquired by a Bachelor's Degree; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience.
Excellent ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to make contributions to manuscripts and grant proposals in
a clear and concise manner.
Strong organizational skills, including ability to prioritize work
and maintain clear and accurate records.
Experience and knowledge with molecular biology techniques,
including DNA and RNA purification, analysis by restriction
digestion and gel electrophoresis, qPCR/PCR and sequencing.
Demonstrated ability to independently interpret results and
Proven ability to work in a laboratory environment which interacts
with large numbers of research and technical personnel and other
Proficiency in the use of statistical software applications.
Knowledge of database, word processing and spreadsheet
applications, including Windows Office and Internet applications.
Ability to learn new software as required.
Thorough knowledge of lab safety policies and procedures.
Knowledge of current literature related to the research of the
laboratory, and ability to modify lab procedures as needed.
Thorough ability to understand research goals and rationale.
Ability to contribute to discussions in which the goals are
discussed or modified.
Familiarity and experience with the use and maintenance of basic
lab equipment, including incubators, centrifuges, pipetting
devices, balances, pH meters, thermocyclers and water baths.
Experience in mouse breeding, husbandry and handling.
