Proofreader/Document SpecialistCooley is seeking a a Proofreader/Document Specialist to join the Document Processing team.Position summary: Assist the Firm with all proofreading and document processing needs. The Proofreader/Document Specialist will work together with a team of Document Specialists across multiple locations and shifts in an effort to provide the highest level of customer service and quality. This is a challenging and rewarding position within our Firm. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:Position responsibilities: Proofread complex legal documents for proper firm style, consistency, spelling, syntax, punctuation and grammar using proper citation protocols Perform word-for-word reading of converted documents against originals to ensure accurate conversions Perform cross-reference checks and defined term checks Review tables of authorities as requested Check corrected proofs against mark-up to ensure all corrections were made accurately Check formatting for consistency and adherence to requester specifications Review edits and placement of changes/new language per requesters instructions Advise requester of any conflicting issues regarding language usage and formatting Proofread transcription Use standard proofreading marks Manually or electronically perform blacklines and/or redlines to show document changes, as requested; run redlines and compares utilizing ChangePro, Track Changes and Native WordIn a back-up role to Document Processing: Create new documents and revise existing documents in Microsoft Word using scanning, conversion of electronic file or new input typing, or by downloading and reformatting documents from Internet resources such as EDGAR databases Reformat existing documents into Cooley templates and standard or custom formats Convert documents to Word from a variety of applications and file formats, such as pdf Transcribe analog or digital dictation files Scan documents Use email, including email with multiple attachments Transfer documents to/from removable media and secure file transfer platforms Conduct Internet, intranet, network and archive searches, as requested Mark and generate Table of Contents and Table of Authorities (utilizing Best Authority) Log work and cost recovery information All other duties as assigned or requiredSkills & experience:Required: Available to work overtime, as required After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications Minimum 3 years legal proofreading experience Knowledge of currently used legal writing styles and citation protocols Thorough knowledge of document comparison software, including Microsoft Word Track Changes Proficient in various proofreading functions Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, iManage, Acrobat, IntApp, eDictation, Litera ChangePro and scanning software Fast and accurate typingPreferred: Bachelor's Degree in English or related field At least 1 year of legal document processing experienceCompetencies: Ability to work independently and under pressure in a sedentary manner for long periods of time Excellent command of English language Ability to interact with team members at all levels in a professional and respectful manner at all times Strong written and verbal communication skills, including expert-level knowledge of the English language, including grammar, spelling and punctuation Ability to work through complex legal document markups and instructions in a timely and accurate manner Ability to prioritize various requests and deadlines simultaneously Proven ability to perform complex work in a timely manner and meet strict deadlines Critical thinking skills; exceptional attention to detail Familiarity with legal terminology and a variety of document formats used in legal workCooley offers a competitive compensation and excellent benefits package.EOE
