The Space Components Business Unit is seeking a Product Value Stream Design Leader to join our team. Northrop Grumman Space Components Business Unit designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include satellites and associated space components and services; launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; and advanced aerospace structures.This position will be located in either San Diego, CA or Magna, Utah.The Product Value Stream Design Leader will provide both programmatic and technical Design leadership to the Structures Operating Unit (OU) and will have responsibility for quality, technical execution, schedule, and cost. The role will lead a product value stream design team and work closely with program leadership, structural analysis, manufacturing and testing teams, technical leaders, and functional subject matter experts within the Space Components Business unit.This position is expected to routinely perform design tasks in support of programs in conjunction with leadership roles and responsibilities. The product value stream design leader will report to the Design functional manager. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in design engineering and strong experience leading design activities.Leadership Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Design authority for value stream
  • Subject matter expert on composite structures design including composite laminate design (flat and molded), metallic fittings design, assembly architecture, etc.
  • Manage resources in collaboration with design functional manager
  • Escalation, assignments, employee reviews, employee development, DLY management, hiring, recruiting, and verification of work completeness and accuracy
  • Own program performance - SQDEC daily management. Escalation of technical, schedule, and financial issues. Lead and/or support peer reviews at product level. Track first pass yield (FPY) and on time delivery (OTD) for design value stream
  • Program execution and support of program requirements
  • Ensure technical compliance. Manage risk assessment and management across programs in value stream. Identify needs for product development. Ensure proper coordination with tool design group. BOE's and assumptions in support of proposals
  • Standardize, and improve, design processes within value stream
  • Focus value stream lessons learned, best practices, and continuous improvement implementations.Competencies:

      • Interact with analysis and development teams (teams include specialists in Analysis, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)
      • Generate mid-plane models (deliverable to Analysis) and detail solid product models
      • Support development of flight hardware design from preliminary through critical design phases, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and transportation
      • Contribute to selection of various materials used in the design of composite structures
      • Perform venting analysis for space flight structures - Perform tolerance stack up analyses
      • Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural design for internal review boards and external customer design reviews
      • Assist in assessment and disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomaliesBasic Qualifications:
        • Requires Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5+ years experience in the structural design field within an engineering environment
        • Demonstrated leadership experience of an engineering team on structural design efforts is required
        • Proficiency in space and aerospace composites structures architecture, including bonded joints, sandwich panels and metals is required
        • Demonstrated experience with composite materials manufacturing processes and applications for extreme environments is required
        • A broad understanding of engineering, manufacturing, cost and schedule execution, scope management, and risk management is required
        • Proficiency in Siemens NX and Teamcenter is required
        • Must be a US citizenPreferred Qualifications:
          • Master's degree in Engineering or MBA preferred
          • Demonstrated experience in DFMA principles and mistake-proofing is preferred
          • End item test design and support experience including static load testing and dynamic testing is preferred.
          • Aerospace experience with product definition (specifications, SOW's, drawings) and design and verification processes is preferred
          • Must be a self-starter and possess strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
          • Must have the ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
          • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are preferred
          • Ability to receive a security clearance

            Salary Range: 110352 - 191664

            Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
