Advantage Technical is seeking a Sr. R&D Engineer for our client in San Diego, CA. -


SUMMARY
The Senior R&D Engineer operates under limited supervision and is responsible for the design and/or development of new or modified products using the methods of technical research, project planning/resourcing, material screening, experimental design (DOE), simulation, and product transition to create sustainable and profitable product lines. Acts as a technical liaison providing troubleshooting and technical support for projects related to the development of new products and designs Assignments are broad, requiring originality and ingenuity. Usually works independently and only confers with senior management on unusual matters. May be frequently assisted by a technician or other engineer. Works on diverse scope problems where data analysis requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Networks with senior internal and external personnel in their area of expertise to advance the development of products.


REQUIREMENTS
Requires BS degree in engineering, Advanced degree preferred
5+ years of recent manufacturing experience in an engineering environment developing and deploying processes
Ability to apply a broad knowledge of a particular field of specialization toward the completion of complex assignments that may cross fields of specialization.
Thorough understanding of a variety of testing and metrology tools. Experience with DOE, FMEA, and problem solving required.
Advanced understanding of customer and suppliers processing technology
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Advanced MS Excel and ERP skills for data mining
Travel for this job may be required up to 15%.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Mechanical or Materials engineer with finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) demonstrated proficiency, preferably using Ansys software tools.
2. Hands-on mechanical and/or thermophysical measurement testing experience for microelectronics is also desired.
3. Evaluate microelectronics packaging thermal/mechanical performance considering manufacturing needs and part high reliability.
4. Interact, daily, with a variety of people from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Able to work with customers and manage deadlines effectively.
5. Hands-on mechanical and/or thermophysical measurement testing experience for microelectronics is also desired.
6. Partners with prototype and process engineers for process development and qualification.
7. Coordinates projects between sales, customers, purchasing, prototype development, and production.
8. Performs design reviews and creates new, unique designs and concepts for customers.
9. Evaluates and provides baseline recommendations for designs based on material, package costs, and performance to end-user. May participate in quoting or pricing.
10. Contributes to input regarding the cost of design, materials, and process under the specific guidance of an engineer and finds technical solutions to increase yield and decrease production cost or loss.
11. May train and/or mentor technician-level personnel and associate engineers in projects to ensure organizational growth.
12. Performs and analyzes results of thermal, electrical, material, or related experiments on a new product. Creates thorough and engaging presentations to educate the team on findings and corrective actions.
13. Works closely with parent company engineers, research staff, and production management with new process development and customer qualification.
14. Leads specific R and D projects that are broad in scope and are minimally supervised. Reports on progress to a variety of stakeholders and keep projects moving to stay on schedule.
15. Generates own specific project goals and timelines to prioritize workload so those actions are in alignment with development goals and facility targets. Constant adjustment and corrections to these project goals and use of well-developed project management skills.
16. May design tooling, fixtures, material containers, vessels, machines, or tool installation. Works with EHS and Supply Management as needed for purchase and vendor negotiation. Supports and researches capital purchase decisions.
17. Interfaces with customers as needed, including giving technical presentations. Explores and investigates new processes required for next-generation technology of application.
18. May work in a cleanroom environment and around a variety of chemicals daily.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Four-year college degree, preferably in Mechanical or Materials engineering with an advanced degree. or experience resulting in broad knowledge of a field related to the job, plus 5 years of related experience and/or training. Or equivalent combination of education and experience. Hands-on measurement experience. 3-to 5 years of industrial experience is a plus.
