Atlas has a career opportunity for an ICC Soils Inspector to join
our team. We are seeking an experienced Engineering Soils
Technician or Soils Inspector to join our team in our San Diego
Office. This is for a key team player position where
professionalism and supporting clients are critical. The successful
candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the standard
specifications, and the standards for soils and concrete testing in
the field in order to verify conformance to construction plans and
specifications. The Special Inspector/Technician will interact on a
daily basis with owner and contractor teams to inspect active work
projects, prepare daily reports and data sheets and occasionally be
called upon to perform various tasks to meet our client's project
goals. You must be able to clearly communicate with the site
representative regarding project specific recommendations.
Essential duties include field observation and testing of every
aspect of mass grading, underground utilities installation and
backfill, and subgrade, base, asphalt/concrete placement and
testing. Specifics include density testing of fill. The applicant
must perform verification and plotting of all removals, keyways,
buttresses, fill placement as well as the use geo-synthetic
materials and drainage systems. Job responsibilities include, but
are not limited to:
- Confirm recommendations of the geotechnical engineer, as
described in the geotechnical reports are implemented by the
earthwork contractor
- Must be able to read and understand plans and
specifications
- Keep an organized field file containing field and laboratory
data, reports, letters, and other pertinent field
documentation
- Confirm adherence to current regulatory agency's grading
ordinances and building codes
- Be attentive to detail and concentrate efforts on learning
technical skills
- Keep up to date on a daily basis, all current projects via
project managers and other technicians/inspectors
- Communicate clearly and daily with their direct supervisor and
with the project manager regarding all aspects of the field
operations, including bringing on-site issues to the project
manager's attention, prepare and review all field paperwork, maps
and test sheets and submit them on a daily/weekly basis
- Perform in place density tests using the sand cone method
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, a 4-year college degree in Earth
Science or Engineering is a plus
- The successful candidate should have 5+ years of soil and
concrete testing experience or equivalent
- Must be able and willing to work some weekends and occasional
overtime
- Must have strong communications skills and be computer savvy -
(Word and Excel) and able to add and use Apps on a smart phone or
tablet
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret design plans and project
instructions
- Ability to write daily reports
- Must be willing to work out of town (travel)
- Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving
record
- Must be able to pass a background check for clearance to work
on military installations
- Must be able to check a vehicle for safety and change a spare
tire
- Ability to follow Construction Site Safety
PrecautionsCertifications desired:
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field-Testing
Technician - Grade 1 certification
- Caltrans Certifications: CTM 125, 216, 231, 375, 504, 518, 523,
533, 539 and 540
- ICC Soils Special Inspector
- Certified in CPN Radiation Safety and use of Nuclear Soil
GaugePhysical requirements:
- Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects
weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety
shoes, glasses, gloves and hard hats.
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time.
- Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or

periods without getting tired.
- React quickly using hands, fingers, or feet.
- Kneel, stoop, crouch, bend, twist or crawl.
- Keep or regain the body's balance or stay upright when in an
unstable position.
- Ability to adapt to very warm and very cool outdoor weather
conditions.
- Ability to walk around construction sites, climb ladders,
