DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for working Stem cell and neuron culture for a study of antidepressant response in major depression as a Cell Culture Research Associate II within the Department of Psychiatry. The incumbent will create IPSCs, NPC's and neurons from lymphoblastoid cell lines and create lymphoblastoid cell lines from blood. The incumbent will also be responsible for measuring cellular phenotypes including electrical activity, neurotransmitter release and neuronal morphology, shipping samples, providing general lab management including maintenance of equipment, reagents, biohazard reports, etc., and interacting with collaborators. Will also perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Theoretical knowledge of cellular and molecular biology typically attained by a Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  
  
• Demonstrated ability to organize laboratories.
  
  
• Experience to handle human blood samples.
  
  
• Strong ability to communicate and interact well with other scientists.
  
  
• Proven understanding of cell culture procedure.
  
  
• Thorough understanding of DNA extraction and preparation.
  
  
• Proven knowledge of and experience with sterile technique.
  
  
• Thorough knowledge of iPS methods.
  
  
• Proven experience with software applications in data processing (Excel), statistical analysis (SPSS) and graphical presentation of the data (e.g. Excel, Power Point, and Sigma Plot).
  
  
• Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment.
  
  
• Proven understanding of cells growth, electrical activity, gene expression, synapse formation.
  
  
• Strong understanding of cellular phenotypes for differences between SSRI responders and non-responders.
  
  
• Knowledge of spectrophotometric quantification of DNA.
  
  
• Demonstrated knowledge of UCSD biosafety procedures for human blood.
  
  
• Experience conducting transfection assays using luminometer.
  
  
• Knowledge and hands-on experience in working with iPS cells and maintaining biosafety protocols.
  
  
• Strong abilities to provide written summary of research findings. Experience in assisting writing of meeting abstracts, manuscripts, and research grant applications.

  • Must be able to work in a Cell Culture Lab and maintaining biosafety protocols.
    
    Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $56,564 - $90,995 Annually
    
    The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale.
