This is a 100% Contract position for 8 - 9 months. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department. DESCRIPTION The University of California, San Diego, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Research Safety Specialist will support the development, implementation, and management of Occupational Health and Hygiene Programs. Evaluate workplaces to identify, evaluate, monitor, and control health hazards for elimination or reduction of illnesses and injuries. The incumbent will facilitate loss prevention initiatives to protect employees from occupational exposure to chemicals, microbials, noise, and physical agents. In accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, the key responsibilities are to support in the operations of the following programs: exposure assessment and monitoring equipment, indoor environment quality, asbestos, lead, mold, and personal protective equipment. Under direction, the incumbent will provide excellent customer service in responding to occupational health concerns, assisting clients in integrating safety management, and providing ethical and sound industrial hygiene professional practice. Work closely with senior industrial hygienist and collaborate amongst team members, applying the most current compliance requirements and integrating a high degree of customer service to exceed expectations. The EH&S Research Safety Specialist 2 will use applicable EH&S concepts to implement a single-function program or multi-specialty programs applicable to a variety of organization infrastructures and departments. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and for following the defined policies and procedures. Apply professional level knowledge of subject, including complete knowledge of a specialty area within single academic/occupational discipline. Decision-making takes into account established procedures, relevant laws, regulations and organization policy, communication/outreach, and impact on other EH&S programs.

  • Must be able and willing to immediately return to campus during work hours and non-work hours for emergencies (earthquake, fire, hazardous material spills, etc.).
  • Serve as EHS Response Team member. May be requested to respond back to campus to support the EHS Duty Officer in the event of an after-hours, weekend, or holiday incident involving hazardous materials and/or for services provided within the employee's subject area of expertise. QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's Degree in a scientific discipline and professional progressive years experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Solid, comprehensive working knowledge and understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.
    • Demonstrated experience and training in supporting any of these programs: asbestos, ergonomics, exposure assessment, hearing conservation, heat illness prevention, indoor environment quality, lead, mold, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, ventilation, and vibration.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal regulations applying to health and safety issues (EPA, Cal/OSHA, APCD, etc.).
    • Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in evaluating health hazards based on risk and decision logic for exposure assessment of occupationally related chemical, physical or biological hazards. Ability to analyze situations and provide necessary leadership on behalf of the department.
    • Demonstrated experience in: operating air monitoring and analysis diagnostic equipment, troubleshooting instruments, and applying software programs. Demonstrated knowledge and application of administrative controls, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment.
    • Proven knowledge in the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ability to wear the required appropriate level of PPE including respiratory.
    • Demonstrated effective methods in training personnel and presenting classes on occupational health programs.
    • In depth knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other data management software.
    • Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects. Strong organizational skills with the ability to be flexible, yet able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to prioritize workload to meet shifting deadlines and changing priorities with frequent interruptions.
