The individual for this position will be responsible for the formulation development of oral drug candidates for preclinical and human clinical studies. The individual should have a strong oral development background with knowledge of analytical techniques used to support characterization of small molecules and/or peptide drug products. Previous experience formulating drugs as solution or solid dosage form products is desired. An individual at the level of Scientist 2 will be expected to take responsibility for the completion of projects under minimal supervision. The individual will be expected to develop timelines and plan series of experiments as required by service agreements and then coordinate and possibly delegate responsibilities to meet Client expectations. The individual must have a fundamental understanding of ICH guidelines for the chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) of drug products. The individual may be required to assist in the creation and/or revision of company SOPs and to participate in continuous improvement projects. The individual will be increasingly sought for training and mentoring of other colleagues and may supervise a lab assistant. All duties will be performed in compliance with company standard operating procedures (SOPs) and GMP regulations, as appropriate. This is a full-time position: Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm. • Conduct and/or supervise the execution of formulation studies for oral drug candidates. Selects and evaluates container/closure systems and storage conditions under supervision
• Prepare update documents and technical reports for clients. Demonstrates competency in GMP and IND-enabling formulation strategies
• Collaborate with other Catalent sites or external CDMOs to support tech transfer and clinical manufacture, with supervision
• Complex experimental design and execution will be performed independently with minimal supervisor assistance
• Exercise technical discretion and critical thinking in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments independently with minimal supervisor assistance. Data interpretation should be conducted with guidance on complex issues only
• Clear and accurate record keeping in laboratory notebooks and secondary review of other colleagues' work for scientific accuracy and compliance
• Primary responsibility for individual client projects with strategic support from supervisor. Lead discussions with clients on technical topics relating to their project. Supervisor may not need to attend all meetings
• Individuals should have a good general foundation of scientific principles, chemistry concepts, and be proficient in core analytical scientific techniques, GMPs, and technical writing
• May be invited to supervise a laboratory assistant and/or a full time employeeThe Candidate (requirements)
  • 4-year degree (Bachelor's) in a physical, chemical, biological, or pharmaceutical science required. Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience in solid oral/parenteral formulation development required. Will also accept a Master's with 2+ years or PhD with 0+ years of experience.
  • Required experience: small and/or large molecule oral delivery formulation development. Preferred experience with suspensions, capsule, and tablet formulation.
  • Effectively communicate with peers and interdepartmental colleagues
  • Demonstrate considerate and safe behaviors in the laboratory
  • Demonstrate accountability, attention to detail, and organizational skills
  • Physical requirements: Individual may be required to sit, stand, walk regularly and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds; ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, and co-workers. Regular use of telephone and email. Hearing, vision, and speaking within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and fax machines. Good reasoning ability is important. Able to understand and utilize management reports, memos, and other documents to conduct business.Pay:
    • The anticipated salary range for this role in San Diego, CA is $92,000 - $110,160 annually. The final salary offered to a successful candidate may vary, and will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, skillset, education, business needs, etc. Catalent is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
