The San Diego Unified School District is seeking Police Dispatchers to receive emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch to appropriate peace officer or district personnel. This position monitors a variety of safety and security equipment, maintains a variety of logs and records using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

The school police communications center operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shifts are typically three 12-hour days per week, with an additional 8-hour day every other week, and 3 to 4 days off per week. *Graveyard schedules (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) are currently under a pilot program. At this moment no graveyards and Sunday schedules are assigned to staff. Shifts are subject to change. Additionally, this position will be required to work evening, nights, holidays, and weekends. An approximate 5% shift differential may apply.

Police Dispatchers may qualify for the following pay differentials.

Bilingual Differential: 5%

Eligible candidates will participate in a performance exam to test for bilingual fluency.

Post Dispatch Training Differential:

Police Dispatchers that hold a POST Dispatcher Certification are eligible for a differential. New employees must pass a POST Certified Dispatcher Basic Academy within one year of employment.

Basic POST Dispatcher Certificate: 3.5%

Intermediate POST Dispatcher Certificate: 4.5%

Advanced POST Dispatcher Certificate: 6%

Other differentials:

Certified Training Officer differential: 5%

Night differential: 5%

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

* Three years of customer service experience in a demanding, fast-paced environment requiring multitasking and independent judgment skillsOR
* Acombination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to successful completion of the P.O.S.T. certified dispatcher basic academy.
* Recent, full-time or equivalent part-time, paid, civilian or military experience in radio dispatching, public emergency information systems, or law enforcement or experience in a public safety Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) radio communication department is highly desirable.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

* Typing/keyboarding certificate at a net, corrected speed of 30 words per minute or higher.
* Pass a P.O.S.T. certified dispatcher basic academy within one year of employment.
* Successfully complete training program with P.O.S.T. certificated Communications Training Officer (CTO) within 636 hours after beginning training program.

Supplemental Information

POSITION AND BENEFITS:

The position is represented by the San Diego Schools Police Officers' Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement. The District pays for 14-holidays and Paid Time off (PTO). In addition, the District provides a generous compensation and benefits package, including CalPERS 2%@55 for classic members or 2%@62 for new members (CalPERS members after 1/1/13), Six choices of medical plans, including HMO and PPO options through United HealthCare or Kaiser Permanente, Three choices of dental plans, including HMO and PPO options, Vision Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Basic and Supplemental Life Insurance, and Employee Assistance Program. Please note that the District pays the full cost of medical, dental, and vision care premiums for employees who work half time or more and their eligible dependents.

HOW TO APPLY:

In order to be eligible for consideration, interested candidates must submit the following by the application deadline:

* A completed online employment application
* Response to the Supplemental Questionnaire
* To receive education credit, provide a copy of College Degree or Official Transcript.
* A copy of a Typing/Keyboarding Certificate for 30 WPM, net corrected speed on a five-minute timed test must be attached to the online application. Online Typing/Keyboarding Certificates are NOTacceptable.
* Please note that additional documents, if any, should be attached to the online employment application.

The examination process will consist of an application screening based on the candidate's education, work history, and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a Computerized Skills Assessment Exam. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.Applicants that pass the Computerized Skills Assessment Exam will be invited to participate in a mandatory Presentation, Oral Exam, adispatch sit-along and a Final Panel Interview. Individuals that pass all phases of the recruitment process will be placed on an Eligible List for a period of 3-months. The Eligible List will be used to fill vacancies as they become available.

SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL UNDERGO A COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING A POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION, CREDIT CHECK, CHEMICAL SUBSTANCE AND MEDICAL TESTING, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING PRIOR TO HIRE.
