Description:
The Optical Consultant Floater travels throughout the regions to
provide optical coverage at clinics as needed. Designs, measures,
fits, and adapts lenses and frames for patient according to written
optical prescription or specification. Assist patient with
selecting frames. Measure customer for size of eyeglasses and
coordinate frames with facial and eye measurements and optical
prescription. Prepare work order for optical laboratory containing
instructions for grinding and mounting lenses in frames. Verify
exactness of finished lens spectacles. Adjust frame and lens
position to fit client. May shape or reshape frames.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Travels as directed to designated clinics to provide optical
coverage due to absences or increased optical needs.
- Measure clients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex
distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using
measuring devices.
- Verify that finished lenses are ground to
specifications.
- Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and
fabricating eyeglasses.
- Assist clients in selecting frames according to style and
color, and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye
measurements and optical prescriptions.
- Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and
payments.
- Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and
sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing
simple bookkeeping.
- Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit
client needs.
- Sell goods such as contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses, and
other goods related to eyes in general.
- Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames in order to adjust
eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands.
- Instruct clients in how to wear and care for eyeglasses and
contact lenses.
- Determine clients' current lens prescriptions, when necessary,
using lensometers or lens analyzers and clients'
eyeglasses.
- Repair damaged frames.
- Obtain a customer's previous record, or verify a prescription
with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.
- Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
- Understands back-up protocol for processing patients in the
event of system outages.
- May work up patients for the Optometrist as needed.
- Maintains an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor
in accordance with Company policies.
- Keep commitments and keep direct supervisor informed of work
progress, timetables, and issues.
- Obtain and review medical history and/or records from
patient.
- Maintain strict compliance with State, Federal and other
regulations (e.g., OSHA, WC, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, DOL, HR policies and
practices).

Requirements:
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES:
REQUIRED: At least 3 or more years of related work experience as an
Optician / Optical Consultant, dispensing contact lenses and
glasses. Ability to travel to clinics within a day's notice.
DESIRABLE: Associates or Bachelor's Degree.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS:
- Certified Dispensing Optician (a plus)
- Valid Driver's License.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while performing the
essential functions of this job.
- This is primarily an office classification. Depending on the
need of company, travel is required. Temperature conditions are
controlled with limited direct exposure to hazardous physical
substances. The noise level in the work environment is usually low
to moderate.
- Ability to travel to offices as needed.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
regularly required to sit, stand, walk, handle, or feel, reach with
hands and arms, see, talk and hear. The employee will frequently
lift and/or carry reports, records and other materials that
typically weigh less than 20 pounds. The employee is occasionally
required to stoop, kneel, bend, or crouch.
- Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data
using a computer keyboard, calculator, and other standard office
equipment.
