GA's Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) Group focuses on the military and commercial applications of advanced electromagnetic technologies, including power generation and distribution, magnetic levitation, laser and weapons systems, and systems design and engineering. The EMS Group supports government customers, which include the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, the Department of Transportation as well as a range of commercial customers.

GA-EMS is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in High Power Electrical Systems. With limited direction, this position exercises considerable latitude for initiating and developing designs, procedures, techniques and solution to resolving advanced technical engineering problems. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of broad specifications, objectives, possible results anticipated and critical reference points requiring special attention. Guides the successful resolution of engineering problems, serves as a consulting resource of engineering knowledge, applies the latest technological advancements to the problem, and may function in a project leadership role. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, makes technical presentations, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small identifiable projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Perform detailed design of electric energy storage, electric power conditioning, AC and DC distribution, and analog and digital control systems for operating electromechanical rotating machinery in the 10's of MW range. Size, select and design capacitor banks, solid state variable frequency power inverters for induction motors, resistive energy rejection systems, protection systems and analog, digital and imbedded control systems. Document design in specifications covering functions, requirements and design selections.
  • Prepare procurement and fabrication drawings.
  • Prepare and help execute test plans to verify compliance with requirements.
  • Present design and analyses with clarity for reviews, and produce all documents to meet strict configuration management procedures.
  • Interface with systems engineers, sub-contractors, customers and other specialists.
  • Direct junior engineers and CAD designers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

    Job Qualifications:
    • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
    • Experience in leading small teams of engineers and / or technicians in the design development, fabrication, and test of advanced electrical or electromechanical systems.
    • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines.
    • An effective communicator with the ability to represent the Company independently on complex matters, the ability to write, interpret and explain complex issues or technical information.
    • Proficient with common personal computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and project management).
    • Experience in planning, designing, fabricating, and testing advanced electric power inverters, power systems, and analog and digital and imbedded control systems.
    • Ability to meet deadlines within budgets.
    • An effective communicator with the ability to work with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and manufacturing organizations.
    • Familiar with design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer, MatLab, MathCAD, SPICE and or Simplorer etc.
    • Ability to write clearly and make presentations. Proficient with MS Office, MS Power Point and understanding of Integrated Schedule and Earned Value Systems. In addition, the candidate will have experience with the following:
      • Mastery of power conversion topologies and understanding of operating characteristics of power electronic components such as IGBTs, power MOSFETs, and SCRs
      • Strong understanding of control systems
      • Experience designing analog and digital circuits
      • Understanding of electric machine theory, especially including induction and synchronous machines
        Salary: $105,890 - $189,545
